About BESS Family Research Farm
BESS Family Research Farm was founded in December 2014, though, in concept, it has existed for over five years prior. A family-owned-and-operated research farm with a headquarter, its epicenter, located in Snow Hill, North Carolina, we only raise food with the intent to serve the many food deserts throughout the state, nation, and world. Through education, research, diligence, and applications thereof, we seek to address the food crises and to solve problems that have impeded our neighbors' ability to ensure food security for their communities and, ultimately, that of our nation.
With the aging population of farmers in the US (average age of farmers being 65 years old), our food security, food-supply infrastructure, and farming "tribal knowledge" are jeopardized, and, therefore, overall national security is highly vulnerable. Our food-supply network, a centralized supply chain, provides opportunities for new and established roadside fruit and vegetable stands, farmers' markets, grocery stores, and other small family farms. It enables farmers to create jobs again, improving economic conditions in rural Tier 1 counties while meeting the food and nutritional demand of townships and cities throughout the country.
Our research farm has established several educational, including co-op and internship, opportunities in the agricultural sciences for grade-school students, as many of our children are two to four generations removed from farming and agriculture. The goal is to reintroduce our children to the food-production industry, to familiarize them with the careers therein, and to teach them all the hard work that it entails and its values.
The model that we have devised to help our domestic neighbors will be employed to aid our global neighbors to become self-sufficient through sustainable farming. And, in the truest spirit of sharing, all knowledge will be systematically relayed from one neighbor to the next, creating a positive seismic shock wave that will be felt throughout the world.
